We ranked our 7 Caribbean and Gulf dive destinations on four numbers we measure ourselves: how far the places to stay sit from a dive site, how many sites you can walk into, how warm the water stays in its coolest month, and how many sites we mapped. Bonaire scores 99.0 of 100 and ranks first. Curaçao is second with 72.4.

How we scored it
Each destination gets a raw number per metric. We scale each metric across the 7 destinations so the best one gets 1 and the worst gets 0, with the rest in proportion, then multiply by the weight and add up. A perfect score of 100 would mean best on all four. Ties keep the order of our destination pages.

| Coolest month | 20% | Higher | The average sea surface temperature of the coolest calendar month, 2011 to 2025, from NOAA OISST. A warm coolest month means a thin wetsuit all year. For the cenotes, whose water is fresh, we use the low end of the cenote water temperature on the hub page instead. |
| Mapped sites | 10% | Higher | How many dive sites are on our hub map. Every hub has far more than we mapped, so this gets the smallest weight. |

What this leaves out: reef health, marine life, current and visibility are real reasons to pick a destination, but we have no measured number for them that compares fairly across all 7. Distances are straight lines between two mapped points, not walking routes. Site counts are the sites on our maps, and every destination has more. Sea temperature is the surface reading from satellites and buoys, not the water at depth. Key Largo ranks last: it scores worst of the group on median stay to reef.
Egypt's Red Sea is on our maps but outside the Caribbean, so it is not ranked here. Sources: stays and dive sites come from the same data as each destination page, where every point names its source, and the full lists are on our open data page.
